Atkins Diet is Best

Postby mgirishbride83 » Fri Apr 09, 2010 9:25 am

A year long study has found that Atkins was the most successful diet, both in terms of weight lost after a year, and health benefits.

Researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine Prevention Research Centre took a group of 311 overweight women and assigned them to one of four different diets.

They gave them a brief counselling session and sent them off with a book about their diet (aiming for real life conditions). Each woman ate similar amounts of calories and their health was monitored during the study.

At the end of the year, they found that the women on Atkins has lost 10.4lb, almost twice as much as the 5.7lb in the LEARN group. Ornish dieters had lost 4.8lb and the Zone group had lost 3.5lb.

The Atkins group has also shown the biggest decrease in blood pressure, triglycerides, cholesterol and bodyfat.

Best advice I can give about doing Atkins is to eat real food, and plenty of vegetables. Far too many people think Atkins is all about eating deep fried cheese and Atkins bars. In fact, you eat things like eggs, oily fish, fresh meat and chicken, and lots and lots and LOTS of green veg.

Ideally, eat when you are hungry, and not until you are hungry. Don't snack or nibble just because it's coffee time unless you are hungry. You'll be surprised how long you can go before you are properly hungry. Getting in touch with what your body really needs is one of the best things you can do, on any diet.

Curry: chicken and babysweet corn and green beans or mangetout cooked in coconut cream, curry powder and lemongrass.

i dont kow if i agree with this, anyone i know who did this diet either fely faint and sick doing it or else did lose the weight only to put it back on plus more!!! its a hard one to follow for the rest of your life!!! just another fad diet!!! i think the best saying is MOVE MORE EAT LESS !! this works !!!

Im not too sure abouth the atkins diet either as a long term solution, although it can work for some people. Im a fan of move more eat less idea aswell and I thing that sensible food choices also works. I dont believe in depriving yourself of any type of food, maybe just restricting some types such as sugary snacks or treats. But like every diet unless you are discipled and ready to adapt your lifestyle a bit then a diet doesnt really last long. Small steps to begin with before taking big strides and leaps and bounds!!!

yeah you nedd to find a lifestyle change rather than a diet or quick fix!! i dont believe in restrictions!! if i restrict myself i end up binging!! thats why weight watchers is a good diet as ther are no restrictions!! but point counting makes me insane, i try to eat healthy and go to the gym or put a bit more energy into say the house cleaning and when the adds on the telly are on i get up and walk around or run up and down the stairs!! but its all about finding what works for you!!

Im the same, ive started cycling into work this summer and going for more walks. This has been easy as h2b hasnt been in Dublin, but he is back down today for the winter as he is back at college tomorrow so I mightnt cycle and walk as much. I usually try and put a bit of effort into cleaning aswell, but as ive be practically living on my own this summer iv got very lazy and usally the effort is actually deciding to get up and do the housework!!

Yeh thats my aim aswell, though I have over 2 years, tried on one or two dresses and Im not that bad, but ive that little belly that pokes out every now and then that I would love to tone up a bit. So my aim in the next year is to tone up arms and belly and to keep my fitness level up. Not all that worried about losing weight, but could do with losing half a stone, which I would do if I apply myself to toning up!

Ive found good motivation now in looking at dresses! Was surprised though Im a size 10 most of the time, even in dresses, but in wedding dresses Im more of a 12, was quite a surprise as didnt think that I would go up a dress size!
